Winter Leadership for Field Leaders

Winter Leadership level 1
This course is being offered in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting. Successful graduates will be certified to lead trips into class 1 hiking terrain in winter conditions providing they are 'adequately supervised'.

Course fee includes instruction and student manual.

Course Content:

The primary learning content for this course will be reading the course manual and completion of the pre-course exercises.The field portion of the course will be 75% discussion and practice of the topics followed by an exam with theoretical and practical components.

Topics covered include:

  • Clothing selection for various winter conditions
  • Preparing an activity plan for a particular location under specified weather conditions
  • Understanding what specialized equipment is required and how to use it
  • Understanding the additional group management skills required for winter over summer environments
  • being able to recognize and respond to the onset of cold injury
  • Understanding the role of nutrition and water intake in winter conditions
  • Recognizing how to manage slippery surfaces

Prerequisites: The LL1 certification is a prerequisite to take this course.
